How to root an Android device without voiding the warranty

If you're not an Android expert, the idea of messing with your system can be a bit intimidating, though, and the warnings about messing up and bricking devices can put many people off what's actually a pretty simple and useful task. The excellent iRoot app makes rooting your device a one-click affair, and you don't need to worry about voiding the warranty on your device either.

Note: This procedure is only available for devices that are running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher, but not Lollipop: the iRoot software in this tutorial is compatible with Android up to version 4.4. This also works on devices that have built-in security software, such as Samsung’s Knox.

Forget the cumbersome procedures like having to use Odin, searching for flashable recoveries, and all the rest. Once your device is recognized (in a database of over 8,000 devices), the iRoot will enable permissions using root exploits and will do it all with a simple click of the button.

Software Required

  • iRoot (formerly VRoot): PC Software that will do everything for you
  • Drivers of your device installed on your PC. The easiest way to get them is by using the management software that comes with your device (Kies for Samsung, Sync for HTC, etc) or searching on the internet for your appropriate model

How to root Android

  • First, if you’ve got a Samsung phone with Knox enabled, make sure that you go into Settings > Security and disable Lock Reactivation first.
  • Install and open iRoot (don’t be alarmed by the Chinese characters, all the important stuff is in English)
  • Make sure that you have USB Debugging Active on your device. You can enable this by going into Developer Options and enabling this setting. If you don’t have Developer Options showing in your Settings, enable this by going into About Phone and tapping on Build Number seven times.
  • Connect your device to your PC.
  • iRoot will look for your device in the database and if recognized, the root button will appear.
  • Click Root. The procedure will start after a few seconds and your device may restart.
  • All done! You can check to see if you successfully got root permission by using the Root Checker application that is available in the Google Play Store.

Enabling SuperSU

By default, when you use iRoot, there is another program that handles superuser privileges on your now rooted device. If you’d like to change this for the amazingly popular SuperSU, just use the following steps:

  • Install SuperSu from the Play Store
  • Open SuperSU. Superuser permissions will be requested, click on OK or 允许 (the option on the right).
  • SuperSu will prompt the user to install the SU Binary. Confirm by clicking ok.
  • Install Titanium Backup from the Play Store
  • Open Titanium Backup and freeze the native superuser app that was installed by iRoot.
  • Reopen SuperSU and reinstall the SU Binary.

There you go! If everything was done properly, you’ll have a rooted device without a modified kernel, which shouldn’t raise any flags in regards to warranty issues.

Why you should Root your Android Device-10 Reasons

There are plenty of reasons to root your phone, whether you own a Galaxy S5 or Nexus 5, an LG G3 or Note 3, but many of them may not be so obvious to you when contemplating whether or not taking the next step is for you. Sure, you can remove carrier and manufacturer bloatware and do full system backups and...well, what else exactly? Today we'll walk you through 10 good reasons to root your phone, but as always, we must remind you that rooting does come with some risks, so be sure you know all about them too before you proceed.

10 Reasons to Root your Android Smartphone

1. A whole new world of apps

2. Customize like never before

Android devices are famous for their ability to change launcher, icon packs, live wallpapers, ringtones, keyboard sounds and much more. However, this customization is usually limited to superficial aesthetic changes. With root permissions you can modify the system files to your liking, including system sounds as well as the boot animation, which is what you see when you start your device up. The level of customization that is possible is near-limitless, but you can only start to see how deep the rabbit hole goes once you've taken the first step.

3. Performance beyond all limits

There are already many apps that can free up your RAM or speed up your phone, and we recently shared an article about how to fix low memory on Android. However, with ''normal'' methods it is not possible to overcome the limitations imposed by the hardware itself, but only to work within those predefined limits. Once again, root permission comes to the rescue, allowing you to modify the actual speed of the CPU via overclocking. To do this it is necessary to flash a custom kernel – the link connecting your hardware to software – that allows it, but the process is very simple, even more so using the app Kernel Manager.

4. No more problems with the battery

Smartphones continue to evolve, but the Achilles heel of the battery has not yet been resolved. Although the best phones can guarantee 24 hours of use (and beyond, thanks to power-saving features), many of us fail to get to the end of the evening. Solution? Buy yourself the LG G3, the new king of the battery! Or, if you're not going to shell out that kind of money, or because you are simply loyal to your current smartphone, you can root and solve the problem yourself. With root you can access a number of functions that will allow you to choose how much power goes to the CPU, so setting a lower limit, called undervolting, can make significant savings in terms of power consumption. Again, you'll need a different kernel to the one your phone came with.

5. Automate everything

Many of you already know the application Tasker, which allows us to automate virtually every aspect of our smartphones. For those not in the know, on the basis of an event (such as the insertion of the headphones, our specific location, a particular time of day etc) we can match an action to it (launch apps, send text messages, play a song) – all managed by this application. It also works without root permissions, but with them we will be able to access the complete list of possible interactions, such as activation of the internet, GPS, screen control, CPU speed, and much more.

6. Flash custom ROMs

This is the number one reason why the majority of Android users decide to get root permissions. In addition to radically (or subtly) customizing a smartphone, the major custom ROMs we like the most tend to outdo the stock ROM in terms of functionality, performance and fluidity; an example is OmniROM, who are working on a ROM for fully integrated voice commands, allowing you to control every function of your smartphone via voice commands. Another important feature is the ability to upgrade our old and manufacturer-abandoned smartphone with the latest versions of Android. Here's our list of the most important custom ROM and root terms explained.

7. Block advertizing

While advertising is, for many developers, their only source of income and the only thing that allows them to create otherwise free apps, it can also be a nuisance that you want to eliminate from your smartphone experience. If an app contains invasive advertising that not only consumes a large amount of data but that can also potentially trigger subscriptions without our consent, as we've seen repeatedly with WhatsApp, it's a problem that can be dealt with if you have root. Apps like AdBlock Plus give you control over the advertising contained in apps and browsers. The use of this application and of other similar ones is possible only for those with root level permissions.

8. Perform full backups

Every Android device has the ability to make a backup of applications and certain data, within the settings menu or through the use of management software like Samsung's Kies. Even if you decide to use these options together with various cloud services, nothing can ultimately compete with the features offered by root permission backups. For example, it is only with root that you can use the legendary app Titanium Backup, with which you can make copies of the entire system image of your device and move it to your SD card or computer. You also have the ability to automate the process at regular intervals.

9. Access features from other phones

One of the best features (or worst, from the point of view of programmers) of Android devices is the incredible variety of phones and tablets that use it, not to mention the individual manufacturer changes to the Android system. This allows us to always have a different device than everyone else, but it also means not always being able to enjoy the unique features reserved for a group of top of the range smartphones. As you're probably starting to realize, root permissions also allow us to do this. In forums like XDA Developers there is a wealth of flashable zips available for all sorts of features, scripts and functions. In addition, we can enable limited functions from specific manufacturers, such as installing LG's Knock On feature on non-LG devices, or using features such as tethering to share and connect phones via USB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

10. Become the master of your universe

This is actually one of the most convincing reasons to root your phone. You bought it, so it's yours and you don't want to be told what you can or cannot do with your own property. Android, by its very nature, is a free system born from the idea of creating an ecosystem of independent software and hardware that is open to everyone (we've written briefly about the history of Android). Getting root permission, in addition to the benefits listed above and many more that I could mention, will make you the ''real'' owner of your smartphone, giving you complete control, albeit with some risks, of customizing basically anything you want to, exactly how you want it. And this is perhaps the best part of rooting your Android.

Bonus: reversibility

The best thing about rooting is that if at any time you decide you'd prefer to go on as before, before you got root permission, you can do this in a snap. This means you can return to the original firmware of your device and, in most cases, also restore your warranty (with a little smoke and mirrors). All of this can be achieved through the use of a special tool  kit or just by reflashing the original firmware with Odin or another flash tool. So that completes the circle! If these reasons have convinced you that root is for you, first: read, read, read some more. Knowledge is power: that's the best way to avoid any hiccups!

5 Best tricks to free up space on your iPhone

Maybe you're gearing up for the launch of IOS 9 in September -- or maybe you just want to be able to take a photo without having to delete an older one to make space. Either way, we could all use a little extra storage on our iOS devices, right?
Here are a few easy ways to quickly reclaim some of your iPhone's or iPad's storage space -- and some tricks for making sure it stays clear.

Stop storing texts forever

keep-messages.png
By default, your iPhone stores all of the text messages you send and receive...forever. This is convenient if you need to look up a 15-month old conversation; not so convenient if you need that storage space back. To stop your phone from saving texts forever, open up the Settings app and tap Messages.Scroll down until you find Message History and tap Keep Messages. ChangeForever to 30 Days or 1 Year. A pop-up will ask you if you want to delete older messages; tap Delete to proceed.

Don't double-save photos

If you use your iPhone's HDR mode or Instagram a lot, you've probably noticed that your phone automatically saves two photos: the HDR version and the normal version (or, in the case of Instagram, the filtered, cropped Instagram version and the normal version).
keep-normal-photo.png
To stop double-saving HDR photos, open the Settings app and go to Photos & Camera. Scroll down to the bottom and untick the toggle next to Keep Normal Photo.
instagram-photos.png

To stop double-saving Instagram photos, open the Instagram app, tap your profile tab, and then tap the Settings (gear) icon in the upper right corner. Under Settings, untick the toggle next to Save Original Photos.

Clear your browser cache

clear-history-and-website-data.png
If you use Safari often, your iPhone may be storing Web history and data that you simply do not need. To clear Safari's browser cache, open up the Settings app and tap Safari. Scroll down and click Clear History and Website Data.
chrome-clear-browsing.png
If you use Chrome instead of Safari, open up the Chrome app and tap the menu icon in the upper right corner (three vertical dots). Tap History and at the bottom of the screen tap Clear browsing data.

Purge offline data

offline-reading-list.png
You may be inadvertently saving offline data in apps that you probably use only while you're online. Safari's offline reading list, for example, can take up unnecessary space saving Web pages for you to read when you have no Internet connection. To clear Safari's offline reading list, open up the Settings app and go toGeneral > Usage > Manage Storage > Safari. Swipe left over the words Offline Reading List and tap Delete to clear the cache. Doing this will not delete individual items from your reading list (to do that, open the Safari app, go to your Reading List and swipe left over items you want to delete).
spotify.png
Spotify also stores offline data if you choose to make playlists Available Offline. To de-authorize this data, open up the Spotify app and find the playlist that you want to make unavailable offline. At the top of the playlist, you'll see a toggle next toAvailable Offline. Turn this toggle off.

Selectively delete apps and data

Most of these tricks will clear up a little extra space -- but if you need a chunk of storage available stat, then you'll need to start deleting some "real" stuff, like apps, photos, videos, podcasts and music. Before you start doing this, check out which apps are using the most space by opening the Settingsapp and going to General > Usage> Manage Data.
most-storage-apps.png

Here, you'll see a list of apps sorted by the amount of space they take up. You can tap on an app to delete it directly from this menu, or you can use this list to figure out which apps are using up more data than they should be -- for example, ifPhotos & Camera is near the top, you know you need to get rid of some pictures; while if Music tops the list, you should probably delete a few songs or albums.

What is Installous and Why you Should Install it

If you are a geek or non-geek and you hold an iPhone or iPad, one of the most common queries which you will be asked by others:

  • Is your iPhone Jailbroken?
  • Is your iPhone Factory unlocked?

Now, in this article, I will be talking about one app, which will surely encourage you to jailbreak your iOS device. Apple app store is full of apps and most of good one are paid and then there are free one too. For me, I’m a big fan of many popular Paid games but again when you can get something for free, why would you spend money for that. Specially, with so many amazing pais apps available in the market, I’m sure you would not like to spend a fortune buying and trying all apps.

What is Installous?

I have just hinted you above about Installous and if you can’t read between the words, here is a complete explanation of what Installous is and why you need it on your iOS device.  Installous is a jailbroken iOS application, which has been developed by docmorelli, though it was originally created by puy0. This application enables you to download, install, share as well as update cracked apps in quite an organized fashion. It’s available on Cydia by the name ‘Installous 5’ and you would need a jailbroken device in order to install and use it.
In simple word, if you are looking to install paid apps on your iPhone and iPad for free, you need Installous. It’s an app, which will let you download paid apps, as well as free apps from file sharing and torrent sites. Even if you don’t have an app store ID, you can use installous to install apps on your iPad or iPhone.

Features of Cydia Installous:

Local Sharing
There’s a ‘LocalSharing’ feature present in this tweak, and it allows you to share tweaks or cracked applications with other devices by using Bluetooth or if the devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. This feature can be enabled by going into Settings and selecting any one of the IPA files present in the Downloads tab. By clicking on ‘Send IPA’, instructions will appear telling you how to send the file to some other device.
Multitasking
Applications can be downloaded and installed in the background, and this gives you the option to do other tasks on the device.
Updates
It also tells you about the updates available for the apps present in the device, through the ‘Updates’ tab. All you need to do is click on the update and receive information about the new version. Clicking ‘Download’ will show a set of instructions, which will enable the update to be downloaded and installed.
MobileHunt
This feature will ask you if you want to send an application to another user who hasn’t used the said app. The whole process is anonymous and quite safe.
Apptracker integration
This allows you to report links to the moderators in order to keep apptracker clean. Before proceeding, you need to register with apptracker to make use of this feature.
Downloading through BitTorrent
BitTorrent downloading is also supported. All you’re required to do is click on the ‘magnet link’ visible and the downloading process will start. The app which has been selected needs to be ‘demagnetized’ from the ‘downloads’ tab or by using DHT in order to obtain the .torrent metadata. The download can be paused and started again depending on your preferences.
All of these features make life easier, especially when it comes to downloading and sharing cracked applications. There is one requirement before you download installous and install it, you need to jailbreak your iOS device. You can easily jailbreak iOS device up to iOS 5 and for iOS6 users, you need to wait for a while. You can install Installous from the Cydia Repository Hackulo.us. You can read a complete guide here on How to install installous from Cydia.
