Android 6.0 Marshmallow is Android M confirmed by Google

Google has officially confirmed Android 6.0 Marshmallow as the next name of Android M on its official Developers blog. This announcement has put an end to months of speculation on what the final name of Android M will be and it coincides with the final Android M developer preview and the release of the Android 6.0 SDK.

There's no release date given for Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the blog post mentioned "this fall". The final developer preview of Android M is available now, and introduces API level 23, which is what the final version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be. The Android 6.0 SDK will allow developers to start preparing their apps properly for the new Android API level.

The two of the biggest additions in the Android M release are native fingerprint scanner support and individual app permissions.

The first adds a significant layer to Android's stock security, and the second brings more user-facing controls over individual apps access to parts of Android such as contacts, camera, microphone and location.

Here's the short version of the API update changelog for you:

Android platform change:

Final Permissions User Interface – we updated the permissions user interface and enhanced some of the permissions behavior.

API change:

Updates to the Fingerprint API – which enables better error reporting, better fingerprint enrollment experience, plus enumeration support for greater reliability.
